China Water Irrigation and Hydropower Construction Second Directorate
With decades of development, China has become the world’s second largest economy, a feat made possible due to the countries’ success with large-scale civil engineering projects. This success is exemplified by the China Water Irrigation and Hydropower Construction Second Directorate (CWIHCSD) which has constructed many of the countrys essential hydroelectric and irrigation structures in a very cost effective and efficient methodology.
The CWIHCSD was established in March 1955, and is responsible for the construction, repair, and modernization of a variety of large-scale water management related infrastructure. Some of the key projects managed by this organization include the development of the Three Gorges Dam, the Wujiang Pumped Storage Station, The South-to-North Water Transfer Project, Project SAVE, and the Chongqing-Fuzhou High-Speed Hydro Project.
Each of these projects is incredibly complex and the CWIHCSD has deployed innovative, cutting-edge solutions in order to ensure successful completion. For example, on the Three Gorges Dam project, an advanced monitoring system was developed to ensure quality control and ensure that the dam is running at peak efficiency. The Wujiang Pumped Storage Station was completed in an incredibly short time frame, taking only 18 months to construct. The South-to-North Water Transfer Project is an incredibly ambitious endeavor, rerouting the water from the South of China all the way to the Northern region.
The mission of the CWIHCSD is not only to provide efficient solutions for Chinas water-related needs, but also to create projects which will serve as models for other countries around the world. As part of this mission, the CWIHCSD has internationalized its operations, actively collaborating with foreign counterparts and engaging in different international forums. In addition to this, the organization has adopted best practices to ensure that the projects that it creates are sustainable and able to withstand the test of time.
The CWIHCSD is at the forefront of Chinas water infrastructure development, utilizing modern engineering and innovative solutions. Its impressive track record is a testament to the organizations commitment to developing efficient and cost-effective projects which contribute to Chinas success story.
