Oil Drilling Wells
The art and process of applying modern technology to penetrate the earths surface through a series of steps is called Oil Drilling. It is a relatively specialized field and requires the right type of equipment and expertise to be successful. Oil and natural gas are two of the most sought after commodities in today’s world and this is what makes oil drilling a lucrative venture. However, in order to gain access to these resources it is necessary to drill a well.
When drilling a well, a drilling rig is used and the drilling is done for a specific purpose, such as for oil and gas exploration and production, or for the treatment and disposal of nuclear waste. This process may be performed through the use of either a vertical or a horizontal orientation to reach a predetermined depth. Wells may be classified as shallow, medium or deep depending upon the depth and angle of the bore.
Drilling rigs are used in drilling wells in various locations. They are usually operated by a specially trained and experienced crew and typically comprise several different types of specialized equipment. They may include a derrick, which is a tall tower used to support the hydraulic pumps and piping necessary to move and lower the drill string; a power system, known as the rotary, which is used to operate the machine; a casing team that follows the drill pipe as it is being lowered or raised; and a crew of laborers that maintain and move the heavy equipment around the drill site.
The first step in drilling is the top hole. This hole is created by pulling the drill string through the air, which is then lowered to the desired depth. The drill bit is then rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise and the material is drilled out. This process is repeated in a circular pattern until the desired depth is achieved.
Once the top hole has been completed the drill string must be removed from the hole and the casing team is ready to begin running the well. This is accomplished by lowering the casing into the ground before attaching the casings to the drill string. The casing is then run through the entire depth of the well, while the drilling rig continues to drill down until the expected target depth is reached.
Once the target depth is reached, the next phase of the drilling process is to partially or fully case the well. This is done by attaching a series of tubes known as casing to the drill string. This allows the rig to operate in an enclosed environment beneath the surface allowing it to drill deeper and explore the fracture systems further.
At this point the well is referred to as cased and the drill is ready to be put in production. Production wells are defined as those which are capable of producing meaningful quantities of hydrocarbons. While many wells may be able to produce some oil and gas, only those that can produce meaningful amounts of hydrocarbons are considered to be producing wells.
Once the well is producing, the casing team must inspect for leaks and repair any that may be discovered. Furthermore, the rig is also used to maintain and operate the well. This includes monitoring production, carrying out regular inspections, and running any necessary tests or repairs.
The last step in the oil drilling process is to clean up the well and decommission it. This involves removing the pumps and piping, and plugging any leaks that might be encountered. This must be done before the well can be declared safe and decommissioned.
An oil drilling well can be a very profitable venture and is essential to the success of the oil and gas industry. By understanding the process and having the right equipment and personnel, it is possible to be successful when drilling a well.
