Hot Rolled Ribbed Steel Bars in Reinforced Concrete Structures

Reinforced concrete is a composite material made up of concrete and several steel reinforcement elements. The aim of reinforcing concrete with steel bars is to increase the tensile strength of a concrete structure by forming a strong bond between concrete and steel. Hot rolled ribbed steel bars are primarily used for the reinforcement of concrete structures because of the features they offer such as high ductility, strength and weldability. Their uniform shape, which makes them easier to handle when building concrete structures, is also an important factor.

Hot rolled ribbed steel bars are manufactured from specially-treated steel billets. These billets are first heated to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400 °C, and then passed through a series of rollers to form the ribbed profile. This process helps to increase the mechanical and corrosion resistance of the material, and also produces a better bond between the concrete and steel.

The ribs on hot rolled ribbed steel bars help to increase the bond strength between the concrete and steel, which prevents displacement. This means that rather than relying on the friction between the two materials, the bond strength between concrete and steel becomes the main factor in resisting displacement. Additionally, when these ribs are deformed by turning down their ends, they lose their transverse rib and become debonded from the concrete. This helps to spread the load evenly, reducing the risk of cracks and other structural defects.

Another important feature of hot rolled ribbed steel bars is their shape. The uniform shape of these bars helps to make them easier to handle when building a concrete structure. The ribs can be cut or bent to fit into any required shape or pattern, and the uniform shape allows for much simpler cutting or grinding of any required angle.

In addition, due to its high ductility, hot rolled ribbed steel bars are well-suited for use in structures that require flexibility and movement. The high ductility, combined with their uniform shape, makes them an ideal material for structures subject to dynamic, lateral, or cyclic loading.

Moreover, hot rolled ribbed steel bars have very good weldability, which helps to increase the strength of the structure and reduce the risk of failure. Ribbed steel bars can be easily welded to rebars and other reinforcement elements, and the weld does not have to be heat treated if the welding is done correctly.

All in all, hot rolled ribbed steel bars are very beneficial for use in reinforced concrete structures due to the features they offer. Not only do they help to increase the bond strength between concrete and steel and reduce the risk of displacement, but they also provide a uniform shape which makes them easier to handle when building and a good weldability which enables stronger structures.

Hot-rolled Ribbed Steel Bars for Reinforced Concrete

Hot-rolled ribbed steel bars (RSBL), also known as deformed steel bars, used for reinforcing concrete structures are widely used in the world. They are made of low-carbon steel with a specific steel grade and test class. Steel for RSBL is produced by hot rolling and ribbing of cold-rolled round steel bars to get an oscillatory pattern on the outer surface of the plastic deformation.

The plastic deformations are applied to the steel by passing the steel through different small diameter rollers in a complex sequence to get the desired shape. Generally, the rib height is not less than 0.75 mm and is not greater than 2.5 mm. The rib shape, rib width, and rib spacing of the bars are designed to provide a mechanical anchorage of the concrete.

The ribbed steel bars have a better capacity of developing bond with the concrete due to their wave-like shape, smooth surfaces, and dense ribs. They possess good deformability and sufficient strength when used as reinforcing bars for both precast and in-situ cast concrete members. Moreover, because RSBL can be easily bent in all directions, they are convenient in pre-fabrication, erecting and inaccurate cast-in-place of concrete works.

Moreover, RSBL also have good workability, weldability, and resistance to corrosion which are required in civil engineering structures. The steel grade, rib pattern, dimensions and requirements of RSBL is determined according to various codes and specifications. Therefore, the properties of the hot-rolled ribbed are carefully selected based on the purpose of the structures, the characteristics of the reinforcing steel, the requirements for wear and tear, the effects of corrosion, the requirements for design and fabrication, and the type of concrete mix used.
