Six Sigma DMAIC Model

Six Sigma is a data-driven methodology used to improve the quality of products, processes and services in organizations. The acronym “Six Sigma” stands for “Six Standard Deviations from the Mean.” According to the methodology, eliminating defects and improving quality requires the identification and removal of the sources of variation that cause them. The Six Sigma DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) Model is the core of the Six Sigma methodology.

Define: The name of this phase is “Define.” This phase involves the project leaders identifying the problem or opportunity that will be addressed. They also identify a number of objectives and milestones which will be used to measure the project’s success. This includes setting a project charter and a timeline. In addition, the team will also define the key performance indicators (KPIs) that will express the amount of success in the product, process, or service that is being improved.

Measure: During the “Measure” phase, the team measures the current performance of the processes. This involves collecting data from various sources, including customers, market trends, processes and systems. The team also collects and records the current metrics of the process, as well as identifying and measuring any gaps from target performance.

Analyze: In this phase, the team analyzes the data that was collected during the “Measure” phase to identify root causes of variation. They then develop hypotheses by using statistical tools such as random-variable analysis, hypothesis testing, and design of experiments (DOE).

Improve: The team then executes “Improve” activities to test possible solutions and measure the results. This involves designing and implementing new process designs, creating and testing prototypes, and making changes to the existing process.

Control: The “Control” phase is focused on sustaining the improvements that were made during the “Improve” phase. The team will set up control plans to ensure that the desired performance levels are maintained. They will also monitor existing performance metrics to detect any problems or opportunities.

The Six Sigma DMAIC Model is an effective and efficient tool for improving products, processes and services within organizations. By using the DMAIC model, the Six Sigma team can identify and eliminate root causes of variation, closely monitor the process, and sustain project results to ensure long-term process improvement.
