Tapping technology is a process used by industrial manufacturers to make threads on the outside of a piece of material. It is a process used to create threads in small spaces, where cumbersome thread-making machines won’t fit. Threads are cut into the material using a special tool, referred to as a tap. The type of tap used depends on the type of thread to be cut, with different taps labeled as metric or imperial.

In order to make tapered threads, a pointed tool is used, typically referred to as a bottoming tap. This style of tap is used most frequently for making hole threads due to the need for a deep throat. It is important to use the correct type of tap in order to form a successful thread.

When using a tap, the manufacturer may also need to use a cutting oil. This oil helps reduce friction and heat generated during the hole creation and tap descending processes. Heat can cause warping and breakage of the material, both of which must be avoided in order to ensure a successful thread formation. Additionally, cross-flute threads can run at faster speeds, making them the preferred choice where speed is an issue.

Depending on how frequently the threads are used, either hand-checking or machine-checking may be necessary in order to check their size and depth. Automated software can be used to check the threads for accuracy, as can CMM equipment.
