Mechanical Properties of High Strength Steel Pipe for Tower Application

High strength steel pipe is an important material which is used in many industries, such as the engineering and construction industry. The popularity of this type of pipe is due to its strength and durability. Hence, the mechanical properties of high strength steel pipe are important to ensure that the material can effectively perform the task it is intended for. This article looks at the mechanical properties of high strength steel pipe for tower application as specified by JIS G3474-1995.

The JIS G3474-1995 standard for tower application specifies that the high strength steel pipe should have a minimum yield strength of 345MPa, a minimum tensile strength of 435MPa and an elongation of at least 22%. The steel pipe should also show Charpy V-notch impact test results exceeding 20J at -10 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the carbon equivalent should not exceed 0.45%.

The mechanical properties of the high strength steel pipes used in tower application as specified by JIS G3474-1995 can be divided into two categories, namely the yield and tensile strength properties. In terms of yield strength, the nominal minimum yield strength should be 345MPa, while the actual stress sustained should be at least 90% of the nominal yield strength. In the case of tensile strength, the minimum should be 435MPa with an actual stress sustained of at least 90% of the nominal strength.

Elongation is another important mechanical property of high strength steel pipe used in tower application as specified by JIS G3474-1995. Elongation is expressed as a percentage of the original length of the specimen. The minimum elongation should be 22%. The Charpy V-notch impact test is a test used to measure a material’s resistance to impact. As per the standard, the minimum V-notch impact test should exceed 20J at -10 degree Celsius.

The carbon equivalent of high strength steel pipes for tower application as specified by JIS G3474-1995 should not exceed 0.45%. The carbon equivalent is a measure of the quality of steel obtained when two alloys are intermixed. The higher the carbon content in a certain alloy, the better quality of steel is assumed.

The mechanical properties of high strength steel pipes used in tower application as specified by JIS G3474-1995 are important to ensure that the material is suitable for the purpose it is intended for. The minimum yield strength should be 345MPa while the minimum tensile strength should be 435MPa with an actual stress sustained of at least 90% of the nominal strength. The minimum elongation should be 22%, the Charpy V-notch impact test should exceed 20J at -10 degree Celsius and the carbon equivalent should not exceed 0.45%. High strength steel pipes must also comply with the other requirements specified by the standard in order to be suitable for the intended purpose.
