Cranes are machines that move, lift and lower materials. Usually, cranes are associated with the construction industry and used for any heavy lifting and transferring materials around sites or loading and unloading ships.
Today, there’s a variety of cranes available ranging from highly specialized cranes that are used for unique applications to traditional cranes used in the construction industry.
Cranes are typically categorized by their structural design, how they move and how much they can lift. The two most common design styles are the lattice boom crane, which consists of telescopic booms mounted on a latticed girder structure, and the more modern telescopic crane, which consists of a single-piece metallic boom that allows cranes to lift heavier loads. Cranes can also be broken down into those that move on rails, such as railway cranes, and those that drive off-road, such as truck-mounted cranes.
The maximum amount a crane can lift is determined by its capacity. This capacity is based on the amount of weight it can safely lift, the size of its hoist line, and its strength and reach.
Cranes are powered in two different ways, with either cable or hydraulic systems. Both systems work in similar ways yet require different levels of maintenance and operating costs. In a cable system, the crane’s slender hoist cable and reel are propelled by mechanical operators, while in a hydraulic system the crane’s movements are centralized within a hydraulic system.
In addition to moving, lifting, and lowering materials, modern cranes often have specialised attachments such as grabs and hooks, or platforms that can be used for specialised tasks such as welding, painting, or demolition. Attachments help to increase the versatility of the crane, making it better suited for specific tasks.
When used correctly and properly maintained, the powerful machines that cranes provide can be incredibly beneficial in a wide range of industries and can help improve safety protocols. They are important tools for the construction industry, but can also be found in marine, manufacturing, transportation, and many other sectors. As technology continues to advances and cranes become more sophisticated, the applications of cranes are starting to expand.
