Magnesium smelting
Magnesium smelting is a process for producing magnesium from raw materials. The process is also known as magnesite smelting. The molten magnesium produced in the electric arc furnace is then poured into a refractory-lined container and cooled. This cools magnesium to a molten form, and reveals any remaining non-metallic inclusions that were not sufficiently melted in the electric arc furnace. These can then be removed before the metal is cast into the desired shape.
Once the metal is in the desired shape, it needs to be heat treated in order to improve its workability and durability. Heat treatment involves heating the metal to a specific temperature and keeping it at that temperature for a certain amount of time. During this process, the metal is exposed to certain gasses or liquids, and further impurities are removed.
