Dear Sir or Madam,
At first, thanks for giving me this chance to talk about turning or grinding, two common processing methods in mechanical manufacturing.
Turning is used to shape the material of a workpiece by rotating the cutter around the roof of the workpiece or the part. It is primarily used to produce cylindrical shapes. When the cutting tool moves parallel to the axis of workpiece movement during the cutting process, it is called turning. The tools used in turning can be divided into two types, single-point tools and multi-point tools. The single-point tool can only process a small area at a time and is usually used only to cut grooves. Multi-point tools usually have several cutting blades and can shape the entire surface of the workpiece in one pass.
Turning process has the advantages of high machining accuracy and convenient operation, which are widely used in mechanical industry. The surface processing quality can reach IT7-8, the hole machining accuracy can reach the grade of IT8-10, and the size precision of the workpiece can reach IT6-7. Moreover, turning process has the characteristics of low cost, fast processing speed and high production efficiency, so it is highly favored by modern manufacturers.
On the other hand, grinding is a process in which material is removed from a metallic workpiece by controlling its grinding wheel with a grinding wheel. In other words, its a process of using abrasive to wear the surface of the material. Grinding process is usually used to process the hardness of less than 9.5 rock and difficult to process the material. Its advantages are high surface processing accuracy and metallographic quality.
In addition, the cost of grinding process is higher than that of turning process, and the grinding wheel is consumable, but grinding process is more suitable for fine processing and finishing of small parts or even small holes. The average roughness Ra of grinding process is 0.16 micron, which is much smaller than the 0.1 micron of turning process.
In conclusion, turning and grinding are two different processing methods in mechanical manufacturing, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages. Turning process is mainly used to produce cylindrical shapes, and grinding process is mainly used for fine processing and finishing of parts with small hardness or high precision. I hope the brief introduction of turning and grinding in this letter can bring you some help.
Thank you for your kind attention.
Sincerely yours,
