People all over the world have experienced major changes due to the current pandemic, but perhaps none so dramatically as those living in cities. International cities such as London and New York, known for their hustle and bustle and significant populations, have been in a state of near-complete suspension since the onset of COVID-19. Businesses and stores have closed their doors, public spaces are empty and those who are able to are staying in the safety of their homes.
However, for all cities, this situation has resulted in some unique and unexpected opportunities. For example, the decrease in traffic in cities like London has allowed more space for cycling, particularly in congested areas like Oxford Street. This safer, quieter environment makes cycling a much more attractive form of transportation and provides an easier and healthier commuting experience for those who are able to cycle.
Moreover, the quieter, less crowded environment has also encouraged many people to make use of public parks in towns and cities instead of staying inside. With playgrounds, walking trails and open green spaces, it has given a much-needed break to those who are stuck in their homes and can only exercise safely outdoors. Though it is difficult to know the extent to which these changes will be long-term or if they will revert when the pandemic finally passes, this could represent a major change in the way cities operate.
Finally, the less-than-ideal circumstances have also paved the way for other initiatives that have greatly benefitted those in cities. For example, fashion brands like Levi’s have used upcycled denim for a range of face masks and other protective gear, whilst restaurants have used their kitchens to produce and donate food for those in need.
These initiatives and forms of enterprise adapted to the current environment go to show just how quickly and effectively citizens and businesses can come together to create something positive when it matters most. As cities prepare for an uncertain post-pandemic future, these examples of collective action and resilience will be essential for successful recovery and are certainly an inspiring reminder of human potential.
