Wuchang Shipyard, located in Wuhan City of Hubei Province, is one of the earliest shipyards in China. Established in 1871 and incorporated into the Ministry of the Navy in 1896, this shipyard was responsible for the design, fabrication and maintenance of ships for the Chinese Navy.
Since its establishment, Wuchang Shipyard has been an important dockyard for the development of the Chinese Navy. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wuchang Shipyard was involved in the design, fabrication and maintenance of a large number of vessels for the Chinese Navy. This includes generating two generations of steel-clad battleships and cruisers, steam launches, torpedo boats, torpedo and gun launches, auxiliary steamships, patrol boats, minesweepers, submarines and other warships.

With the development of China’s economy, Wuchang Shipyard has undergone extensive modernisation and now produces a wide range of commercial and defence vessels. This includes ocean-going freighters and passenger liners, naval warships, medium and high-speed ferries, patrol and rescue vessels and fishing boats.
In addition to the construction of new vessels, Wuchang Shipyard houses extensive repair facilities. This includes floating docks for specialised repair, machinery repairs, electrical repairs as well as minor repair shops.
Wuchang Shipyard has a number of other services as well. This include steel conversion and fabrication, engineering and design works, as well as research and development of naval ships.
