Abstract

Chloroethylene, also known as vinyl chloride, is a volatile, colorless, flammable liquid that produces an irritating odor when exposed to air. Vinyl chloride or chloroethylene has wide application as an important raw material for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is necessary for us to provide a measure of protection for personnel to ensure vinyl chloride production is conducted in a safe environment. This paper aims to discuss the safety technology code for vinyl chloride or chloroethylene according to GB14544-93.

Introduction

Vinyl chloride or chloroethylene, also known as ethylene dichloride, is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with an irritating odor. It has a molecular weight of 62 and a boiling point of -15 °C. It is widely used as a raw material for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). However, it is important to note that vinyl chloride is toxic and flammable and presents an explosion risk and adverse health effects, including liver damage and cancer. In this regard, safety precautions must be taken while handling and manufacturing vinyl chloride which will be discussed in the following sections.

Safety code

The general safety technical code of vinyl chloride or chloroethylene was formulated in accordance with the GB14544-93 standard. The main points of this code include the following:

• Personnel must wear protective clothing when working with vinyl chloride, including a mask, goggles, overalls, and protective gloves.

• The maximum allowable total concentration of vinyl chloride or chloroethylene in the air is 5 mg/m3.

• The ventilation system must be regularly checked to ensure it is functioning properly and the air is being properly circulated.

• There must be a fire extinguisher and other safety equipment available in the vicinity at all times.

• A closed system must be used when transferring vinyl chloride or chloroethylene between containers.

• The concentration of vinyl chloride or chloroethylene should not exceed the allowable limits in storage tanks or containers.

• Each manufacturing process must be designed in accordance with safety codes and regulations.

• An emergency rescue system must be available in the event of an accident or mishap.

Conclusion

The safety technical code of Vinyl Chloride or Chloroethylene formulated according to the GB14544-93 standard is a set of rules and regulations designed to ensure the health and safety of personnel who are working with this volatile and flammable substance. Adherence to these codes and regulations is essential for the safe manufacturing and handling of vinyl chloride or chloroethylene.
