Metal Cutting Machine Tool Name and Categories, Groups and Series Division Table (Eight)
Metal cutting machine tools are a type of machine tool that use cutters to remove material from a workpiece, forming desired shapes and sizes. In this table, we have divided metal cutting machine tools into 8 categories, first by type, then further divided into different groups and series.
I. Lathes
Lathes are a type of metal cutting machine tools which use a single-point cutting tool to shape and size a turning workpiece.
A. Turret Lathes
Turret lathes are machine tools that allow the cutting tool to cut on either side of the workpiece. They are versatile in their ability to process a range of surfaces and internal features, such as tapers and grooves.
B. Capstan & Turret Lathes
Capstan and turret lathes are machines which can mechanically and automatically change the direction in which the cutting tool is applied to the workpiece. The cutting is done using the same stationary cutting tool, except that it is rotated or moved around the rotating workpiece.
C. Multipurpose Lathes
Multipurpose lathes are a type of machine which allow for more complex shapes to be machined into the workpiece. They typically work by spinning the workpiece and then moving the cutting tool around it, allowing for a much greater variety of cuts to be made.
D. CNC Lathes
Computer Numerical Control lathes, or CNC lathes, are machines which use a computer to control the cutting tool. This allows for extremely precise cuts and machining operations to be performed.
II. Milling Machines
Milling machines are machines that are used to shape and size a workpiece using a rotating cutting tool.
A. Bed Type Milling Machines
Bed type milling machines are machines which use a flat and rigid work table, which is then moved around the workpiece to create shapes and sizes.
B. CNC Milling Machines
Computer Numerical Control milling machines, or CNC milling machines, are machines which use a computer to control the movement of the cutting tool. This allows for extremely precise cuts and machining operations to be performed.
C. Horizontal Milling Machines
Horizontal milling machines are machines which use a flat and rigid work table and then move the cutting tool in a straight line across the workpiece. This type of milling machine is ideal for cutting relatively large and flat shapes and is also suitable for producing internal machining operations.
D. Vertical Milling Machines
Vertical milling machines are machines which, similarly to the horizontal milling machine, use a flat and rigid work table and move the cutting tool in a straight line across the workpiece. However, this type of machine is different in that the cutting tool is moved across the workpiece in a vertical direction, making it useful for producing slots and other shapes which require a cut along the vertical axis.
III. Drilling Machines
Drilling machines are machines which use a rotating cutting tool to create a hole or recess in a workpiece.
A. Radial Drilling Machines
Radial drilling machines are machines which use a revolving head which is mounted on an arm. The cutting tool is moved along the arm, allowing it to make a hole in the workpiece from almost any angle.
B. Pillar Drilling Machines
Pillar drilling machines are machines which use a vertical column or pillar to hold the cutting tool in position. The cutting tool is then moved up and down along the vertical column, allowing for a variety of holes to be made in the workpiece.
IV. Grinding Machines
Grinding machines are machines which use a rotating abrasive wheel to cut away material from a workpiece.
A. Surface Grinding Machines
Surface grinding machines are machines which use a rotating abrasive wheel to cut away material from the surface of a workpiece. This type of machine is very versatile and can be used to create many different shapes and sizes.
B. Centerless Grinding Machines
Centerless grinding machines are machines which use a rotating abrasive wheel to cut away material from the sides of a workpiece. This type of machine is commonly used for grinding long cylindrical shapes.
C. Cylindrical Grinding Machines
Cylindrical grinding machines are machines which use a rotating abrasive wheel to shape and size a cylindrical workpiece. This type of machine is used for a variety of tasks, from shaping cylindrical pieces such as spindles and pistons, to producing intricate shapes and sizes.
V. Sawing Machines
Sawing machines are machines which use a toothed or serrated cutting wheel to cut a workpiece into desired shapes and sizes.
A. Band Saws
Band saws are machines which use a continuous toothed cutting wheel to cut a workpiece. They are typically used to create larger cuts in thicker materials.
B. Circular Saws
Circular saws are machines which use either a circular or reciprocating cutting wheel to cut a workpiece. This type of machine is typically used for making smaller and finer cuts than what would be possible with a band saw.
VI. Broaching Machines
Broaching machines are machines which use teeth or serrations to cut a workpiece into desired shapes and sizes.
A. Linear Broaching Machines
Linear broaching machines are machines which use a linear motion to move the cutting tool across the workpiece. This type of machine is ideal for producing straight cuts.
B. Circular Broaching Machines
Circular broaching machines are machines which use a circular motion to move the cutting tool across the workpiece. This type of machine is commonly used for cutting internal and external shapes, such as grooves, radii and tapers.
VII. Shaping Machines
Shaping machines are machines which use a reciprocating cutting tool to cut a workpiece into desired shapes and sizes.
A. Planing Machines
Planing machines are machines which use a reciprocating cutting tool to cut along the surface of a workpiece. This type of machine is mainly used for cutting metal.
B. Slotting Machines
Slotting machines are machines which use a reciprocating cutting tool to cut into the workpiece. This type of machine is mainly used for cutting internal features, such as slots and grooves.
VIII. Power Hacksaws
Power hacksaws are machines which use a rotating saw blade to cut into a workpiece. This type of machine is primarily used for cutting metal.
These are the 8 categories of metal cutting machine tools, with each category further divided into different groups and series. Each group and series offers specific functions for a variety of applications.
