EN 10155-1993 Delivery Conditions for Structural Steels Resistant to Atmospheric Corrosion
1. General
The present European standard EN 10155-1993 defines the delivery conditions for structural steels resistant to atmospheric corrosion, intended for use in general structural applications with a required atmospheric corrosion resistance of at least 5 years, for construction and repair works.
This standard defines the delivery requirements for specific qualities of structural steel: the main ones being S235J0W and S355J0W.
2. Scope
The present European standard applies to steels resistant to atmospheric corrosion that are used in general structural applications and are produced in the form of hot-rolled plates and flats, and hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated strips.
For these steels, it provides the required quality, performance and mechanical characteristics.
3. Definitions
For the purposes of this European standard, the following terms and definitions apply:
- Atmospheric corrosion resistance: the ability of a material to resist damage due to environmental influences;
- Coated strip: strip produced, for example, by the deposition of zinc, aluminium or other metal, by hot-dipping, zinc-aluminum spraying, zinc-magnesium spraying, by electro-galvanizing or by hot-dipping with an epoxy coating;
- Hot-rolled plate: plate produced by the rolling method in which successive passes are made through a furnace heated to the rolling temperature;
- Flats: flat steel product with a thickness of 4 mm or more;
- Steel grade: the classification or designation of a product indicating its general or specific characteristics;
- Structural steel: steel for use in buildings or other structures.
4. Grades and Properties
The steels covered by this standard are defined by the following table, which indicates the material grades and their properties according to the requirements of the standard.
Table 1: Grades and properties of structural steels resistant to atmospheric corrosion
Grade Properties
S235J0W Strength: 235 MPaYield: 25-26%Tensile: 17%Elongation: 20-21%
S355J0W Strength: 355 MPaYield: 17-19%Tensile: 20%Elongation: 15-17%
5. Delivery Requirements
The delivery requirements specified in this standard include:
- Quality requirements
The steel must meet the following requirements:
- Not more than 6 % of any piece must contain nonmetallic inclusions.
- The chemical composition must comply with the requirements.
- Surface imperfections must not exceed a depth of 0.5 mm.
- Mechanical properties
The steel must meet the strength and elongation requirements of the applicable grade indicated in Table 1.
- Testing
The steel must be tested for weight, strength and elongation according to the applicable standard.
- Dimensions
The steel must be delivered in the form and sizes specified in the applicable standard.
- Condition of delivery
The steel must be supplied in the specified condition or in the condition requested.
- Marking
The steel must be marked with the following information:
- Manufacturer’s identification mark
- Grade
- Heat number
- Date of manufacture
- Quantity
6. Quality Control
The manufacturer must ensure that the quality of the steel is in accordance with the requirements of the standard. The manufacturer must inspect the material to ensure that it complies with the quality requirements. The manufacturer must also inspect the material to ensure that it meets the mechanical and dimensional requirements.
The manufacturer must also keep records of tests, inspections and other related activities.
7. Conclusion
This European standard defines the delivery conditions for structural steels resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It includes the required quality, performance and mechanical characteristics, and it also specifies the delivery requirements such as the quality requirements, the mechanical properties, the testing requirements and the marking requirements. The manufacturer must ensure that the quality of the material meets the requirements of the standard by carrying out tests and inspections.
