Overview
Silicon steel is a kind of alloy consisting of iron, silicon and other elements. It is a type of steel with a low carbon content and a very high magnetic permeability. Silicon steel can be divided into two types: non-oriented and grain-oriented. In China, the Chinese Standard GB/T2521-1996 and GB/T2522-1996 were used to categorize the silicon steel. In Japan, the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), C2531 and C2535, are used to categorize the silicon steel.
Chinese Syndard GB/T2521-1996 and GB/T2522-1996
The Chinese standard GB/T2521-1996 and GB/T2522-1996 are used for all the cold-rolled and annealed inorganic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.2 wt%. GB/T2521-1996 is used for all the non-oriented silicon steel sheet and GB/T2522-1996 is used for the grain-oriented silicon steel sheet with a thickness of 0.35mm or less.
The Chinese standard categorizes the silicon steel into four categories: 8KG-Series, 8M-Series, 8N-Series and 8A-Series. The 8KG-Series refers to the non-oriented cold-rolled silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.08 wt%. The 8M-Series refers to the non-oriented annealed soft magnetic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.2 wt%. The 8N-Series refers to the grain-oriented cold-rolled silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.08 wt%. The 8A-Series refers to the grain-oriented annealed soft magnetic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.2 wt%.
The Chinese standard also categorizes the silicon steel according to its electrical performance, which includes its magnetic induction, maximum core loss, flux density, and permeability. The 8KG-Series, 8M-Series and 8N-Series are all rated with a maximum core loss of 2.25 W/kg, or 2.32 W/kg for the 8N-Series. The 8A-Series is rated with a maximum core loss of 1.56 W/kg.
The 8KG-Series, 8M-Series and 8N-Series are all rated with a maximum magnetic induction of 2350-3000 gauss, or 3000 gauss for the 8N-Series. The 8A-Series is rated with a maximum magnetic induction of 3600-4000 gauss.
The 8KG-Series, 8M-Series and 8N-Series are all rated with a flux density of 0.8T, while the 8A-Series is rated with a flux density of 1.0T.
The 8KG-Series, 8M-Series and 8N-Series are all rated with a permeability of 0.22-0.35, while the 8A-Series is rated with a permeability of 0.4-0.5.
Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS),C2531 and C2535
The Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) C2531 and C2535 are used for all the cold-rolled and annealed inorganic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.2 wt%. JIS C2531 is used for all the non-oriented silicon steel sheet and JIS C2535 is used for the grain-oriented silicon steel sheet with a thickness of 0.35mm or less.
The JIS categorizes the silicon steel into three categories: 6K-Series, 8K-Series and 10K-Series. The 6K-Series refers to the non-oriented cold-rolled silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.04 wt%. The 8K-Series refers to the non-oriented annealed soft magnetic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.08 wt%. The 10K-Series refers to the grain-oriented annealed soft magnetic silicon steel sheet with an iron content of not more than 0.2 wt%.
The JIS also categorizes the silicon steel according to its electrical performance, which includes its magnetic induction, maximum core loss, flux density, and permeability. The 8K-Series and 10K-Series are all rated with a maximum magnetic induction of 2300-3000 gauss, while the 6K-Series is rated with a maximum magnetic induction of 3500-4000 gauss.
The 8K-Series and 10K-Series are all rated with a maximum core loss of 2.25 W/kg, while the 6K-Series is rated with a maximum core loss of 1.55 W/kg.
The 8K-Series and 10K-Series are all rated with a flux density of 0.8T, while the 6K-Series is rated with a flux density of 1.0T.
The 8K-Series and 10K-Series are all rated with a permeability of 0.18-0.30, while the 6K-Series is rated with a permeability of 0.35-0.5.
Conclusion
Silicon steel is a type of steel with a low carbon content and a very high magnetic permeability. In China, the Chinese Standard GB/T2521-1996 and GB/T2522-1996 are used to categorize the silicon steel. In Japan, the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), C2531 and C2535, are used to categorize the silicon steel. The standards categorize the silicon steel according to the categories of 8KG-Series, 8M-Series, 8N-Series, 8A-Series (for China) and 6K-Series, 8K-Series, 10K-Series (for Japan). The standards also categorize the silicon steel according to its electrical performance, which includes its magnetic induction, maximum core loss, flux density, and permeability.
Familiarity with the Chinese and Japanese standards for classifying silicon steel is essential for individuals who are involved in the fabrication, processing and purchasing of silicon steel. Knowledge of these standards helps to ensure that the suitable silicon steel with required properties is chosen for the appropriate application.
