South South Central (SCC) University of Mining and Metallurgy is a premier institution for higher education in the People’s Republic of China, located in Luchuan, Guangxi Province. This publicly funded research university with its origins going back to 1911 is part of the Chinese Ministry of Education’s ‘211 Project’, which is aimed at providing world-class education thought China.
The SCC University focuses mainly on metallurgy and engineering, though it has in the past few years successfully implemented an extensive interdisciplinary curriculum which includes humanities, economics, science and law. Universally known as China’s ‘cradle of metallurgy’, the SCC has seen many of the foremost Chinese scientists and engineers pass through its doors and is an active participant in international STEM ventures.
The school has an impressive campus, boasting 60 student dormitories and three lecture halls, along with numerous faculty and administrative buildings. The architecture and design of the university is noteworthy; the campus even has a museum displaying a collection of originals from the Ming and Qing dynasties - a priceless set of records on the geological, mining, and smelting techniques used in ancient China. The university is also home to the SCC Library, which contains both book and digital collections.
The SCC basically consists of five key research areas, including Mining and Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic and Information Technology, and Automation and Control. SCC scientists have achieved outstanding academic achievements in these fields, and have come up with solutions to many problems encountered during the process of exploring and processing minerals in China.
The SCC is well known for its graduate student projects with many of them resulting in patentable technologies. Through the government sponsored “High-Level University Talent Training Scheme for Elective and Scientific Research”, the school provides postgraduate and doctoral programs in a variety of fields. Notable alumni include Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Tu Youyou, former President of Sichuan University Liu Baocheng and world-renowned metallurgist Chen Longshen.
In recent years, the SCC has been expanding its outreach programs, with many joint research projects being conducted with other universities, research institutes and industry partners both inside and outside of China. The school has also secured multiple high-profile grants, collaborations and partnerships in pursuit of its strategic development plans.
