Goal-setting Theory, developed by Edwin A. Locke, is a motivational theory that puts emphasis on the importance of setting goals in order to be successful, whether it be in the workplace or life itself. According to the theory, goals act as a strong source of motivation and improve our overall performance. Additionally, Locke found that specific and challenging goals improve performance much more than easy and non-specific ones. By setting effective goals, individuals and organizations are able to maximize their output and increase the chances of achieving their desired outcome.

The theory suggests that for goals to be most effective, they should be specific and difficult, yet attainable. Additionally, the theory raises three points that can help individuals and organizations set the most effective goals. The first point is to have challenges that are difficult but attainable.
