Shields are some of the oldest weapons of war. Dating all the way back to ancient civilizations, shields have been used to both protect and to attack. Today, shields are still used in warfare, but what are the modern shields used in battle today?

Modern shields come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used for a variety of purposes. The most common modern shields are those used by U.S. and other countries’ special forces and military police. These are typically small, lightweight shields that offer protection against small arms fire and fragmentation. Many MOLLE-compatible shields come with built-in flashlights, allowing for improved vision and weapon orientation while in a defensive stance.

The U.S. Army’s Human Stealth Shield (HSS) is a lightweight, rapidly deployable shield that offers quick mobility and excellent protection from small arms fire. One of the most advanced shields in current use, the HSS is made from a composite material that is water resistant, absorbs impact, and deflects entities such as shrapnel. The shield provides up to 75% coverage for the user and is an effective shield against high-velocity rounds, fragmentation, and even flame attacks.

The Marine Corps Individual Ballistic Shield (MIBS) is a larger shield designed specifically for use in urban combat. Made from an advanced composite material, the MIBS provides full torso coverage, allowing operators to move quickly while providing excellent protection against a variety of threats.

Despite advances in modern armor, many military and police forces still rely on traditional shields to provide protection during operations. These classic shields are often made from steel and have ceramic plates, giving operators protection against small arms fire and shrapnel. There are also shields made from Kevlar, which provide excellent defense against ballistic threats.

The modern soldier or police officer must always be prepared for the worst, and a shield is a great way to give them this additional layer of protection. Modern shields are designed to be effective against both small arms fire and fragmentation attacks and can provide personnel with vital protection in the face of any threat. While not every individual situation will require the use of a shield, it is important for personnel to know that these items are available and what purpose they can serve in certain scenarios.
