Introduction of 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) and 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (AISI 316L) Steel Grade

Steel is a metal alloy that is used in a wide range of applications and industries mainly due to its properties of malleability and resistance to corrosion. To meet the demands of different applications, different steel grades have been developed in the industry to provide the best support for the application requirements. Two of the well-known stainless steel grades commonly used in many industrial processes are 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) and 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (AISI 316L).

00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) is a Chinese grade of stainless steel. It consists of 18 to 20% chromium, 11 to 14% nickel, 2 to 3% molybdenum, and other residuals. It has the following properties: moderate strength, good cold and hot processability, non-magnetic or slightly magnetic, good corrosion resistance, and its ability to increase the anti-corrosion property after heat treatment. The strength of this steel grade is in between the AISI 304 stainless steel and AISI 310 stainless steel. This steel grade is mostly used in surgical equipment, medical instruments, and chemical tanks and reactors.

The 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (AISI 316L) grade of stainless steel is considered to be the low carbon version of 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) grade. It consists of 16 to 18% chromium, 10 to 14% nickel, 2 to 3% molybdenum, and other residuals. The difference between the two grades is the amount of carbon present in the alloys. AISI 316L has a lower amount of carbon which makes it more suitable for welding applications and for reducing the risk of sensitization. At the same time, it provides improved corrosion resistance when compared to other grades. This steel grade is mostly used for the production of food processing equipments, chemical handles and processing containers, petrochemical equipments, and other materials that require superior corrosion resistance.

Both of the 00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) and 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (AISI 316L) grades are highly corrosion resistant, non-magnetic or slightly magnetic, cold and hot processable, and offer superior mechanical properties. In order to take advantage of these properties, the alloys must be processed in the optimal conditions in order to attain the desired attributes.

00Cr17Ni12Mo2 (AISI 316) and 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (AISI 316L) are both versatile stainless steel grades that are capable of providing the best possible performance in the desired application. The difference between the two grades is the amount of carbon present and they can be used for different applications depending on the needs of the end-user. Furthermore, they are both non-magnetic or slightly magnetic, cold and hot processable, and offer superior corrosion resistance compared to other grades. The alloys must be accurately processed in the right conditions to obtain the best performance.
