Applications:

Cr5Mo1V tool steel is mainly used for making cutting tools and parts that require high wear resistance, such as scissors, drills, taps and reamers. Heat Treatment:

Heat Treatments:

To achieve the best performance from Cr5Mo1V tool steel, it should be heat treated in two steps:

Preheating: Preheat the steel to 400-530°C (752-986°F) and hold for several minutes.

Quenching: Quench in 3 to 10secs in vegetable oil at temperatures of 930-960°C (1706-1760°F).

Tempering: Tempering should follow immediately after quenching. Temper at 350 to 370°C (662-698°F).

Forging:

Forging of Cr5Mo1V tool steel should be done between 1250 degrees Celsius and re-heating should be done at 800-900 degrees Celsius. It should be air cooled after forging.

Machinability:

Due to its high hardness, Cr5Mo1V tool steel is not the easiest material for machining. However, it can be machined using standard machine tools with sharp cutting tools and proper surface finish.

Grinding:

It is possible to grind Cr5Mo1V tool steel, but the grinding wheel should be made of a softer material so it doesn’t overheat the tool steel. Grinding should be done dry.

Welding:

Welding of Cr5Mo1V tool steel is not recommended because the welded part may suffer from cracking or other defects. If welding is necessary, at least three layers of weld material should be used and the weld metal should have the same composition as the tool steel or a similar composition.
