IBM Global Project Management Method
Today, projects are becoming increasingly complex and dynamic in their nature, requiring ever-growing agility, scalability and innovation to be successful. In response to the changing dynamics of project management, IBM has developed and implemented a global project management method (GPMM) to help businesses effectively manage projects to ensure successful project delivery and successful outcomes.
The GPMM is a systematic approach to the management of projects. It helps to focus project management activities on meeting customer needs and helps to ensure that outputs are consistent with requirements. It also creates a repeatable process that minimizes the risk of problems occurring in projects. By providing the framework, structure and repeatable process, the GPMM improves the delivery of customer value and reduces the risk of project failure.
The GPMM is based on four stages—Planning, Design, Execute, and Completing. The Planning phase involves developing the project’s scope, success criteria, and timeline, and identifying the necessary governance, resources and deliverables required for a successful completion. The Design phase is focused on creating a detailed design for the project that meets the scope, success criteria and timeline set during the Planning phase. The Execute phase involves carrying out the activities outlined during the Design phase in order to deliver the desired outputs identified during the Planning phase. Finally, the Completing phase outlines the necessary steps to ensure the project is brought to completion in a timely and successful manner.
Within each of these stages, the GPMM recommends specific tools and techniques in order to achieve successful outcomes. In the Planning stage, these tools and techniques include Earned Value Analysis, Project Risk Analysis, and Cost Benefit Analysis. In the Design stage, the GPMM recommends activities such as requirements gathering, solution design, test management, and quality assurance. During the Execute phase, the GPMM suggests activities such as project execution and problem management, defect tracking and management, and change control and management. Finally, the Completing phase outlines detailed procedures for final documentation, lessons learned and handover to the customer.
The GPMM is a comprehensive methodology that includes best practices in project management, provides guidance for current and future projects, and helps to ensure successful project delivery. By providing a repeatable, structured approach to project management, the GPMM enables businesses to navigate more efficiently through the uncertainties and complexity of projects and to reduce their risk of project failure. From its inception to its ongoing adoption, the GPMM has enabled customers to gain value from their projects and to successfully complete them on time and within budget.
