Improvement of Purity of Continuous Casting Steel

Abstract

Continuous casting steel is a special material with a wide range of applications in metallurgy industry, and its purity has a great influence on the performance of the steel. The article discusses the factors affecting the purity of the continuous casting steel and the corresponding improvement measures from several aspects such as the pre-treatment process of the raw material, the oxygen/nitrogen balance factor and the temperature factor to improve the purity of the continuous casting steel.

Keywords: Continuous Casting Steel; Purification; Pre-treatment

1 Introduction

Continuous casting steel is mainly used in the steel smelting and casting of high-temperature and high-pressure steel, and its purity can directly affect the performance of the finished steel. Due to its wide range of applications, it is of great significance to improve the purity of continuous casting steel.

2 Factors Affecting the Quality of Continuous Casting Steel

2.1 Pre-treatment of raw material

The pre-treatment of raw materials is the first step to ensure the quality of finished products. Common operations include screening, sizing, crushing, scrubbing and filtration, etc. Improper operation can lead to the intrusion of impurities such as sand and mud into the steel-making process, which not only reduces the quality of the finished product, but also increases the difficulty of casting steel.

2.2 Oxygen/nitrogen balance

The balance between oxygen and nitrogen of continuous casting steel is vital. Generally, the oxygen and nitrogen in the continuous casting steel are balanced by adding a certain amount of carbon during the smelting process, and further adjusting the oxygen/nitrogen balance during the postprocessing. The improper balance of oxygen and nitrogen will lead to oxidation, degassing and carburizing, all of which will cause corrosion and other problems in the steel.

2.3 Temperature factors

The temperature of the continuous casting steel will not only influence the viscosity and fluidity of the molten steel, but also directly affect the purity of the finished product. If the temperature is too low or too high, or if the temperature fluctuates too much, such as excessive or rapid cooling, it can easily lead to pollutants such as oxides, carbides or cluster carbides being embedded in the steel, thus affecting the quality of the finished product.

3 Improvement Measures

3.1 Take measures to pre-treat raw material

In order to ensure the quality of continuous casting steel, all operations in the pre-treatment process of raw materials must be strictly carried out according to certain standards and regulations. When processing metal minerals, the use of dry powder magnetic separators, dry sieve screens and dust collectors are also necessary in order to reduce the pollution of dust and metal mineral particles.

3.2 Improve oxygen/nitrogen balance

In order to improve the oxygen/nitrogen balance of continuous casting steel, the smelting process needs to adjust the composition of the alloy element and improve the control accuracy, so as to ensure that the carbon content in the steel meets the requirements of technical regulations. In addition, during post-treatment, oxygen-nitrogen kinetic balance equipments should be used for comparison and adjustment in order to reduce the oxidation or degassing of steel that may be caused by excessive or insufficient nitrogen/carbon ratio in steel.

3.3 Pay attention to the temperature control

The temperature of continuous casting steel should be controlled in a certain range in the whole steel-making process, especially in the casting process. Due to the long process of continuous casting, the production operators need to be extremely vigilant and respond quickly when the temperature rises or fluctuates too significantly. In addition, the correct selection of steel pouring temperature can effectively reduce the oxidation rate and improve the purity of the finished product.

4 Conclusion

In summary, purity of continuous casting steel is a complex problem which needs to be solved from every aspect. Proper pre-treatment of raw materials is the primary measure to improve the quality of continuous casting steel, while the oxygen/nitrogen balance factor and temperature factor should also be paid close attention to during production. Only by adopting the corresponding control measures in each link and ensuring the specific operation standards can the steel-making process be effectively controlled and the purity of continuous casting steel be improved.
