The Concept of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a term that is used to refer to an individuals awareness and understanding of their own emotions as well as the emotions of others. It was first brought to prominence by psychologist and author, Daniel Goleman in the mid-1990s. The concept of emotional intelligence attempts to explain the gap between someones IQ (intelligence quotient) and their actual success in life.

Having a high IQ does not necessarily mean the person will have a successful career. Therefore, EI takes into account other factors such as, ones ability to read social cues, manage interpersonal conflicts, and be self-aware. With strong emotional intelligence, a person can gain an understanding of how to handle their own emotions, as well as how to interact and communicate with others in a positive and effective way.

Emotional intelligence is not only a personality trait, but a set of skills needed to navigate life that are often not taught in traditional settings. As an EI coach, I help people identify their emotional triggers and develop strategies to respond to them in a healthier, more productive way.

Developing Your Emotional Intelligence

While some may think of emotional intelligence as something that is inherited or part of one’s natural personality, it can be developed. It is not always easy to increase one’s emotional intelligence levels, but it is possible. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

1. Recognize your emotions: The first step in developing your emotional intelligence is to become aware of the emotions you experience. Take some time to reflect and consider the feelings you encounter throughout your day.

2. Talk about your emotions: It is important to have the courage to speak about your emotions. When you find yourself becoming angry or frustrated, take time to explore why you feel this way and talk to someone about it.

3. Challenge yourself: One of the best ways to increase your emotional intelligence is to put yourself in situations that force you to think and feel in new ways. Look for opportunities to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new.

4. Practice empathy: Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand their feelings. This skill requires conscious effort and practice. Make an effort to understand why someone may have a different opinion than you and learn from them.

5. Develop healthy habits: Emotions can be hard to manage, therefore, it is important to develop healthy habits. These could include meditating, exercising, journaling, and spending time in nature. These activities will help you develop your self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

The Benefits of Emotional Intelligence

Developing emotional intelligence has a range of positive benefits. People with a high level of emotional intelligence are better able to recognize, understand and manage both their own emotions as well as those of others. This can lead to improved relationships and an overall increase in satisfaction in life.

Additionally, people with higher levels of emotional intelligence are often better able to handle stress, handle criticism, and are more open to feedback from others. All of these benefits can lead to greater success in the workplace, improved relationships, and overall happiness.

Conclusion

Emotional intelligence is a set of skills and abilities that can be developed over time. It can be difficult to increase one’s emotional intelligence, but it is possible. Recognizing your emotions, talking about them, challenging yourself, practicing empathy, and developing healthy habits are all steps that can be taken to build emotional intelligence. Learning to recognize, understand and manage emotions can positively impact all areas of life, from personal relationships to professional success.
