For example, kaolin from the southeastern United States is suited for paper manufacturing, while kaolin from the Appalachian Mountains is used mainly in the manufacturing of ceramics. This means that certain reserves of kaolin are much more sought after than others.

The process of kaolin mining in the high-grade deposits of kaolin is called high-grade kaolin (HGK) mining. HGK mining is done in several stages. First, a geologist identifies an area that contains a large deposit of kaolin. Then, a core sample is taken of the deposit and analyzed to determine the quality of the kaolin ore. This analysis includes the amount of kaolinite, impurities, particle size, and color. Once the analysis is completed, and it is determined that the ore is of a sufficient quality, then the mining process begins.

The kaolin ore is then loaded onto a truck and transported to a processing plant. At the plant, the ore is crushed and screened, then mixed with water to create a slurry. This slurry is then filtered and the remaining solids are dried. Once the kaolin slurry is dried, it is crushed and screened to remove any large particles. After the kaolin particles are screened, the kaolin powder is then separated, packaged, and shipped to the customer.
