Introduction

Helical plate heat exchangers are a kind of high efficient and compact heat exchanger for exchanging heat between two fluids. It is a device that transfers energy from one medium to another through a combined mode of forced convection and conduction, as well as thermal radiation. Helical plate heat exchangers are majorly used to reduce fouling in media such as oil, water, and chemicals, as well as in applications such as cooling, heating and condensation.

Design and Construction

The helical plate heat exchanger design usually comprises of a number of thin metal plates that have specially formed edges which are bent into a helix. These plates offer a large surface area and are assembled between the two pressure plates by means of studs which are welded to the plates. After passage of one of the fluids through the construction, the Fins between the plates provide for turbulent flow, thereby improving heat transfer. Heat exchangers made up of helical plates are designed to allow for the most efficient heat transfer., which is accomplished by cutting rectangular holes into the plates which provide for a compact structure and greater heat transfer. Additionally, this type of design also has the advantage of being relatively low cost as compared to other heat exchangers.

Advantages

* Compact size and light weight making it ideal for applications with limited space.

* High heat transfer rate makes it attractive for heat transfer applications.

* Resistance to corrosion as the heat exchanger is made up of corrosion-resistant sheets and materials.

* Anewerhelical plate heat exchangers are equipped with extended surfaces which increase the heat transfer surface area.

* The helical plates are automatically manufactured, so customizations can be achieved.

Applications

Helical plate heat exchangers are used in a wide array of industries and applications, such as:

* Industrial heating and cooling

* Residential heating and/or cooling systems

* Gas and steam turbine power generation

* Refrigeration

* Aerospace and aviation

* Automotive

* Pharmaceuticals

* Food and Beverage Industry

Conclusion

Helical plate heat exchangers provide various advantages such as high heat transfer rate and improved efficiency, due to their relatively large heat transfer surface area. Additionally, they are easy to install, require minimal maintenance and are advantageous for limited space applications. Helical plate heat exchangers are used in numerous industries and applications, many of which rely on and benefit from the efficient heat transfer.
