Hollow steel, also known as hollow steel, is a kind of steel cross section made of uniform thickness rolled and welded steel, which is also called divided steel. It is an iron and steel material with different shapes and wall thicknesses. It is mostly used for steel columns, steel beams, steel scaffolding and other structural systems and can also be used for machinery parts. Hollow steel is divided into circular, rectangular, square and other shapes according to the different cross-sectional shapes, and can be divided into seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes according to different production methods.

Hollow steel is widely used in industry and culture with its huge space and light weight. Generally, it is mainly used for petrochemical pipelines, light poles, oil, gas and other transportation pipelines, shipbuilding, mechanical structure, textile machinery parts, automotive high-pressure gas pipelines, construction bearing columns and other industries. The hollow steel is made of high-quality material, and the fineness and density of the material can be effectively improved when the steel is manufactured. Moreover, the performance of the product produced by the hollow steel is also more reliable and stable.

The size, shape and material of the hollow steel used in rock drill rod depend on the actual needs. Depending on the environment, the GB/T1301-1994 standard hollow steel is usually used. GB/T1301–1994 is a hot rolling steel strip Z8--Z12, Z14--Z55 commonly used in building structures for general structural steel properties and material dimensions. The thickness of the wall of the hollow steel is related to the uses. Generally, the requirements for the steel rods are relatively high. Many domestic steel enterprises have the ability to produce hollow steel conforming to GB/T1301–1994 standard.

Hollow steel used for rock drill rod is formed by cold processing and hot rolling. The cold processing is carried out on the basis of hot rolling. Hot rolling is a process in which a slab is heated and rolled out at a high temperature of 1000~1250℃, which is suitable for rolling plates and strips with a thickness of less than 20mm. Cold process is a process in which hot-rolled steel strip or plate is subjected to a finishing process such as cold drawing and cold bending to obtain a certain size and shape. The cold process has high precision, straightness and perpendicularity, making it an ideal material for rock drill rods.

In the air drilling process, the steel pipe used in rock drill rod can play a role in reducing the wear of the drill bit, improving the drilling speed and extending the service life of the rock drill. The hollow steel has a light weight, strong overall rigidity and reliable performance, which make it an ideal material for rock drill rods. Due to its excellent performance and widely used in construction, oil fields, bridges and other industries, GB/T1301-1994 hollow steel has been preferred in rock drilling, exploration and other engineering construction.
