Environmental Quality Standards
Environmental quality standards are the legal or administrative regulations and policies set by governments or international bodies to protect the environment, human health, and public welfare, intended to:
• Protect natural resources;
• Safeguard human health, safety, and well-being;
• Safeguard ecosystems;
• Protect our air, soil, and water; and
• Conserve wildlife and habitats.
Environmental quality standards are used to reduce the amount of air, soil, and water pollution, to protect ecosystems and wildlife, to reduce emissions of hazardous and toxic chemicals, and to monitor the release of radiation. Such standards have been in place for many years, and are continually being updated as new scientific and public health information becomes available.
One of the most important components of environmental quality standards is the development and enforcement of regulatory standards for air and water pollution. These standards are designed to protect human health and the environment from the harm caused by air and water pollution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed air and water quality standards for a variety of contaminants, including lead, mercury, arsenic, and other hazardous and toxic chemicals. These standards are used to regulate the levels of pollutants that can be emitted into the air and water by factories, power plants, and other industrial sources.
In addition to air and water pollution standards, environmental quality standards also include standards on the use of hazardous and toxic chemicals in products, the safe use of pesticides, standards regarding resource management, waste disposal, and standards for the restoration and management of natural resources. These standards are often set at the national or international level, and are enforced through legislation, regulations, or voluntary programs.
The implementation of effective environmental quality standards is essential for protecting the natural environment and preserving the health of human populations. Environmental quality standards are an essential tool for governments and international organizations to ensure the protection of the environment and the health of its citizens.
