Introducing Physical Properties of 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI205) Chromium-Nickel-Manganese-Nitrogen Austenitic Stainless Steel
Introduction
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) is a chromium-nickel-manganese-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel produced by AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute). It has a low carbon content and is nonmagnetic in nature. This stainless steel has a higher chromium, nickel, and manganese contents than other grades of stainless steel. It has superior corrosion resistance, excellent mechanical properties, good formability, and weldability. It is also advantageous in that it can be used in high temperatures and highly corrosive environments and is used in many industrial applications.
Chemical Composition
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) consists of the following chemical composition:
• Carbon (C): 0.05-0.15 %
• Manganese (Mn): 1.5-2.5 %
• Chromium (Cr): 16-17 %
• Nickel (Ni): 2.0-3.0 %
• Nitrogen (N): 0.10-0.15 %
• Phosphorus (P): 0.04 %
• Sulfur (S): 0.02 %
• Silicon (Si): 0.03 %
• Iron (Fe): Remaining
Mechanical Properties
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness. The tensile strength of this grade is 950 to 1,350 MPa and the hardness is in the range of 170 to 270 HBW. It also has good formability and weldability due to its low carbon content and the addition of nitrogen.
Physical Properties
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) exhibits good thermal and electrical conductivity. The thermal conductivity is approximately 25.0 W/m-K at 20°C and the electrical conductivity is approximately 65.0 MS/m at 20°C. This stainless steel has a density of 7.9 g/cm3 and an elongation of 40-50 % at break.
Heat Treatment
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) can be heat treated in order to improve its mechanical and electrical properties. The heat treatment process consists of a solution anneal which is done at temperatures of 1,450 to 1,550°C and a rapid cooling rate. This process helps to reduce the hardness and make the steel workable.
Applications
1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) is used in many industrial applications due to its superior properties such as corrosion resistance, good formability, and weldability. This stainless steel can be used in applications that involve high temperature and highly corrosive environments such as pulp and paper mills, petrochemical plants, and food processing plants. It is also used for making parts and components for the automotive industry.
Conclusion
In conclusion, 1Cr17Ni2Mn15N (AISI 205) is an austenitic stainless steel that has a low carbon content, nonmagnetic properties, and high chromium, nickel, and manganese contents. It has good mechanical and physical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. This stainless steel can be used in high temperature and highly corrosive environments, as well as for making parts and components for the automotive industry.
