Automated Transmission System Maintenance

Automated transmission systems are essential to the safe and reliable operation of any car or truck. They are the main components that allow the vehicle to change gears efficiently, providing the best power and acceleration performance possible. Automated transmissions require regular maintenance and repair to ensure they are in optimal condition. Fortunately, most components of the transmission system are relatively easy to identify and diagnose, which makes them ideal for DIY maintenance and repair.

The most common types of automated transmissions are the common “automatic” type as well as the continuously variable transmission (CVT) found on hybrid vehicles. The common automated transmission is generally composed of a variable planetary gear set, a torque converter for smooth engagement of engine power and some form of a transmission brake for reverse operation. CVT transmissions are specially designed transmissions that allow for infinite variation in speed ratios and are found on some hybrid vehicles.

The transmission system is the most important and complex component of a car’s powertrain and requires regular maintenance for optimal performance. To keep an automated transmission system running efficiently there are several key components that should be routinely inspected and serviced, including the transmission oil and filter, transmission coolers, input and output shafts, automatic transmission slipping, and transmission complaints. Checking the transmission oil and filter is an important part of scheduled maintenance. The transmission oil should be checked periodically and changed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The oil should be changed at least every 30,000 miles or per the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Inspecting and, replacing if necessary, the transmission coolers can be another source of trouble if not maintained properly. The transmission coolers are located near the radiator and are responsible for cooling the transmission fluid. Regular inspection of the coolers will ensure proper cooling and prevent any damage to the transmission.

Inspecting the input and output shafts is also important. Input shafts are responsible for transferring energy from the engine to the transmission and output shafts are responsible for transferring the power from the transmission to the wheels. If a shaft is worn or has excessive play in it, it should be replaced. In addition, transmission slipping can occur if the input and output shafts are not properly aligned. This should also be checked and corrected if necessary.

Along with these components, other transmission complaints can arise from time to time. These can range from a strange noise coming from the transmission to stale shifting. Noises can be symptoms of other issues such as sticky valves, worn bearings, or a slipping clutch. In addition, if the transmission is not shifting smoothly or is shifting slowly, this can be an indication that there is a problem that should be diagnosed and corrected as soon as possible.

By following the above outlined components and periodically maintaining an automated transmission system, any car or truck can be driven efficiently and reliably. Regular maintenance of the transmission system will ensure the car runs well and will also reduce the chances of costly repairs being needed later on.
