Chemical Composition and Product Shape of Brass

Brass is an important industrial raw material, which is widely used in many fields. It has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, surface gloss and corrosion resistance. In order to make the brass materials with higher performance, people formulate a series of normative standards for the chemical composition and product shape of brass.

In 1985, China issued GB 5232-85, which is a standard for the chemical composition and product shape of the brass materials. According to this standard, the brass alloy is mainly divided into red brass, semi-red brass, yellow brass and galvanized brass. The corresponding chemical composition of each type is different, and the product shape is also very varied, including strip, strip, bar, tube, etc.

Red brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It has a wide range of proportions from 75% copper and 25% zinc to 95% copper and 5% zinc. Red brass has excellent mechanical properties, good malleability, strong wear resistance and good mechanical performance. It is widely used in decoration, water pipes, electrical accessories, etc.

Semi-red brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a proportion of 85% copper and 15% zinc. It has good toughness, strength and wear resistance, and its application range is wide. The most prominent feature of semi-red brass is its red color, which is used in metal ornaments, coins and other decorations.

Yellow brass is also known as brass. It is an alloy of copper and zinc with a proportion of 60-70% copper and 30-40% zinc. This brass alloy has good wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and is widely used in electromechanical products, instruments, etc.

Galvanized brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a proportion of 45-82% copper and 18-55% zinc. This type of brass has good cold working and stress relieving properties, and is often used in cold working and stamping processes.

In terms of product shape, there are two types of brass materials for processing: strip, rod, tube and sheet. The strip shape can be made of red brass and semi-red brass. The rod shape is suitable for making yellow brass and galvanized brass. The tube type is mainly made of semi red brass, yellow brass and galvanized brass. The sheet type can be made of all kinds of brass materials.

To sum up, the chemical composition and product shape of brass are regulated and specified in the standard of GB 5232-85. Since the performance is different for brass alloys with different proportions, when choosing brass materials, we should pay attention to select the right brass alloy with consideration of the corresponding application requirements.
