As a human race it is necessary for us to stay mobile. The invention of the automobile has drastically changed the way we interact with the world and the way we live. Since its invention over the past century it is continuing to evolve and work with new technologies in order to make driving and transportation safer and more efficient. With so many different types of cars, it is important to understand the many terms associated with this form of transportation. Here is a commonplace auto dictionary to help inform and educate readers on the different terms used in the auto industry:

Airbag- An airbag is an inflatable cushion that is designed to protect an occupant in the event of a collision. Airbags are part of an automobile’s restraint system and are primarily used in the front of the vehicle to keep the driver and passenger safe.

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD)- AWD is a four-wheel drivetrain system which distributes torque to all four wheels. It is designed for better traction in slippery conditions.

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)- This system is a safety feature which helps prevent the wheels from locking when the brakes are applied. It is designed to redirect the brakes to each wheel independently in order to maximize traction.

Automatic Transmission- A type of transmission used in cars that automatically selects the gear in response to the speed of the vehicle. It does not require the driver to manually shift gears.

Chassis- The chassis of a car is the main frame of the vehicle. It is the base which all other parts are attached to and it also houses the engine.

Cruise Control- Cruise control is a device which is used to maintain a certain speed while driving. It can be set to a certain speed and the car will maintain that speed until another speed is selected.

Diesel Engine- A type of internal combustion engine which uses higher compression ratios to achieve power from diesel fuel.

ECU- The engine control unit (ECU) is an electronic device which is responsible for controlling the performance of the engine. It regulates the fuel-air mixture, ignition timing and other aspects of engine operation.

Fuel Injection- A system which is used to deliver fuel into an engine. It is an efficient way to deliver fuel into the engine as it provides better control of the fuel-air mixture.

Hybrid Vehicle- A hybrid vehicle is one which uses both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. It is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Power Steering-Power steering is a system which enables the driver to turn the wheels of the vehicle with less effort. This system is operated by hydraulic or electric pumps.

Radiator-A radiator is an engine component which cools the engine’s coolant. It is a heat-exchanger device which helps the engine to maintain its operating temperature.

Suspension- The suspension is the system which connects a car’s wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. It is responsible for absorbing bumps in the road and providing a smooth ride.

Tires-The tires of a car are the rubber contact points between the vehicle and the road. Tires are responsible for providing traction, cornering stability and braking power.

Turbocharger-A turbocharger is an exhaust gas-driven device which is used to increase the power and efficiency of an engine. It is used to force extra air into the engine which increases power output.

These are just a few of the many terms used in the auto industry. With the right knowledge, understanding and education, driving is a great way to stay mobile, safe and efficient. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced driver, having the right knowledge is the key to being a great driver.
