Introduction

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is an austenitic stainless steel, designated for use in highly corrosive industrial environments. AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 has an excellent resistance to corrosion in acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline solutions, even at elevated temperatures, as well as fairly good resistance to oxidation up to 1000°C/1830°F.

Characterisation

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is an austenitic stainless steel and belongs to the family of Cr-Ni austenitics. It contains approximately 19 % chromium and 11 % nickel, combined with a small amount of molybdenum. Corrosion properties depend on the alloyed components, but mainly on the chromium content, which creates an adherent chromium-oxide layer on the surface, providing superior corrosion resistance. AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is known for its performance at extreme temperatures, from cryogenic to temperatures around 1000°C/1830°F.

Additional Characteristics

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is also known as stainless steel, 309 or Grade 309 and possesses a number of benefits such as excellent corrosion resistance at elevated temperature, good formability and weldability, and good mechanical properties, making it suitable for a number of applications in highly corrosive environments. It is often used in a variety of industries, such as petrochemical, food processing and pharmaceuticals.

Applications

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is used in a wide range of industries, including petrochemical and automotive manufacturers, for the fabrication of heat exchangers, boilers, exhaust manifolds, and valves. It is also used in the manufacture of kitchen utensils, equipment for handling chemicals, and parts exposed to severe corrosive environments. Its good mechanical properties and weldability make it suitable for the manufacture of components in food and pharmaceutical processing plants.

Fabrication

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 can be formed easily by bending, spinning and pressing and can also be machined in the annealed condition. Annealing should be followed by a rapid cooling to ensure maximum corrosion resistance. Welding of AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is generally done in an inert gas atmosphere or in shielding fluxes, similar to the welding of other austenitic stainless steels. Mechanical and hardness tests must be performed after welding to ensure that any fabrication meets its intended requirement.

Conclusion

AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 is an austenitic stainless steel, possessing chromium and nickel to give it excellent corrosion resistance, even at high temperatures. It has excellent formability and weldability and good mechanical properties, making it suitable for a variety of industries, such as petrochemical and food processing, as well as for parts exposed to highly corrosive environments. AISI 309/1.4828/X5CrNiMo19-11 can be fabricated by a variety of methods and hardness and mechanical tests should be performed on the completed fabrication to ensure that it meets the required standards.
