Air quality is an important factor in human health and well-being especially in urban areas and industrial environments. Carbon monoxide is a particularly toxic gas that can accumulate in the atmosphere if it is produced in higher concentrations than what occurs naturally. A standard method is available to measure the level of carbon monoxide in air and thus make sure that acceptable levels are not exceeded.

This standard method is known as GB 9801-88 and consists in the quantification of the levels of carbon monoxide in air. The standard applies both to measuring concentrations in the general atmosphere and in specific indoor areas or chambers. The instrument used for the measurements is a carbon monoxide detector. This detector uses a small sampling pump that draws in a sample of ambient air and the detector then measures the subsequent concentration of carbon monoxide in the sample.

The concentration of carbon monoxide should be no more than 10 parts per million (ppm) in a given area, according to international guidelines. This value is typically lower in well-ventilated urban areas; however, in a poorly ventilated environment or indoor area, this enforced limit should be stringently observed. Another important factor to bear in mind is that high concentrations of carbon monoxide can be reached very quickly in an enclosed space and thus the amount of ventilation should be closely monitored.

A decrease in the pollutant levels of carbon monoxide can also be achieved by using devices or methods that remove this form of pollutant from the environment. The two most commonly used devices are catalytic converters and oxidation catalysts. Both these devices are simple to install and can dramatically reduce the presence of carbon monoxide within a given area.

An important part of the monitoring process consists of periodic calibrations of the carbon monoxide detection device used. From a safety point of view, this device should always be operated to manufacturers guidelines and inspections of the detector should be carried out on a regular basis. Furthermore, if a maintenance call is not responded to in a timely manner, then the detector should be disconnected until proper repairs are carried out.

In summary, carbon monoxide is a hazardous gas and thus its presence must be monitored and controlled carefully. The use of the GB 9801-88 standard to measure carbon monoxide levels in air is the most cost-efficient and reliable way to do this. Furthermore, measures should be taken to reduce the presence of this gas in the environment and periodic calibrations of the carbon monoxide detector should be undertaken regularly. In this way, the Carbon monoxide levels in the atmosphere can be carefully monitored and maintained within the prescribed limits.
