The Chauncy–Lloyd Cycle Theory was developed by two scientists: E. Chauncy and T.Lloyd. It is based on the idea that the firing of calcium channels in the brain, known as the calcium wave, regulates different processes within the body in a cyclical manner. This theory suggests that both physical and mental health are linked to the presence or absence of this wave and its corresponding cycles.

The cycle is divided into four stages. During stage 1, the wave is at maximum strength and is linked to higher levels of alertness and energy. This is followed by the “valley of fatigue” which occurs during stage 2. During this phase, the wave is at its weakest and is associated with lower levels of energy and alertness. The third stage is the recovery phase, which is characterized by a gradual increase in the wave’s strength and subsequent increase of energy levels. Finally, in the fourth stage, the wave is at peak strength and is associated with peak energy and alertness levels.

Functionally, Chauncy–Lloyd Cycle Theory helps explain how physical and mental health are affected by short and long-term stressors. According to this theory, if a person is exposed to prolonged, chronic stress, the individual’s wave is unable to reach peak strength and the associated benefits do not occur. This can lead to physical and mental health problems such as fatigue, burnout, and depression. Similarly, if a person is only exposed to short-term stressors, the wave does not have time to reach full strength and the body does not reach peak performance levels.

Therefore, in order to maintain good physical and mental health, it is important to find an appropriate balance between periods of stress and rest. Too much of either can lead to physical and mental health complications. Those individuals who are able to modify their stressors to match with their cyclic pattern are the ones who experience the benefits associated with the Chauncy–Lloyd Cycle Theory.

Understanding how the body and mind are affected by stressors is integral to finding balance and maintaining good health. To explain the River-Ebbing Cycle Theory, we need to examine the three stages of soil erosion, transportation and deposition that occur in a river system. During the second stage, transportation, the sediment is transported downstream carried by the current of the river.
