Swaziland is a small country in Southern Africa, squeezed between Mozambique and South Africa. It is home to slightly fewer than a million people. The country has sometimes been called the “Jewel of Africa” due to its stunning landscapes, colorful culture, and welcoming attitude towards visitors.

The landlocked nation is ruled by King Mswati III and has one of the world’s oldest democracies. The economy is largely based on subsistence farming and specializes in cash crops like sugar, tobacco, and wood. There are also some light industries in the cities.

Swaziland has long been known for its diverse cultural heritage, with influences ranging from traditional Siswati music and dance to more contemporary forms. Traditional food draws on African, Indian, and Portuguese flavors and dishes. The country is particularly known for its craftwork, especially items crafted out of wood and clay. These craft pieces can be found in many of the nation’s villages and markets.

The country isn’t as open to foreign tourists as some other African countries. However, visitors will enjoy a laid-back atmosphere, plenty of nature, and engaging cultural experiences. Popular attractions include the Mlawula Game Reserve, the Malolotja National Park, and the Ngwenya mine. There are also some cultural sights like the Songimvelo Nature Reserve and the Siswati Village.

In addition to its stunning landscapes and diverse culture, Swaziland also has strong religious roots. Nearly 90% of the population identifies as Christian or Zionist, which are two sides of the same monotheistic Swazi faith. The nation is known for its celebrations and rituals, including the annual Incwala ceremony. It’s held each December and involves music, dance, and theatrical performances.

There is much to admire and explore in Swaziland. From its stunning nature to its vibrant culture and faith, the country is sure to charm and delight travellers. Be it a short stay or a long one, be sure to experience a little of the “Jewel of Africa”.
