Sand Casting
Also known as “green sand” casting, sand casting is a widely used process all across the world. As a cost-efficient yet effective method of forming metals, sand casting is employed in a variety of industries and sectors, from medical and automotive to electronics, aerospace, and industrial.
In sand casting, a mold is filled with a sand-clay mixture that is packed around a pattern. This pattern is then exposed to heat, causing the sand-clay mixture to solidify into a single piece in the shape of the pattern. This is known as the sand mold and is used to form the cast piece. The sand mold is then filled with molten metal, which is usually put into a special pouring vessel to form a metal casting.
Generally, sand castings are created as a coreless casting process. This strengthens and supports the pattern by allowing air and metal to flow through the shell of the sand mold. It’s important for the metal to be poured slowly—if it is poured too quickly, it can cause the metal to become trapped in pockets or pins and result in a defective part.
Sand casting can be done using either high- or low-temperature sand, known as a core (which is heated) or surface dry sand (which is not heated). High-temperature sand is typically used when high levels of precision and detail are required. It results in a denser and stronger metal which offers greater structural integrity and can increase the life span of the casting.
Low-temperature sand, however, is the more affordable option and is often best suited for larger, simpler designs with less regard for surface finishes. It is best used in lightweight and low-pressure applications.
