Operating Instructions for Three Roll Mills
The three roll mill consists of three cylindrical rollers mounted on an axle. Each roller rotates in an opposite direction from the adjacent roller creating a resistance to pulling an object from the surface of the roller. The three roll mill is used to reduce particle size in a wide variety of products and is suitable for use in many different industrial processes.
The three-roll mill operates in three distinct modes: idle (no load), consistent pressure and independent roller adjustment.
Idle Mode
The idle mode is used to settle the three rollers into a usable configuration and calibrate them for consistency. To enter the idle mode:
1. Set the load speed to “1” (slowest)
2. Close the gap between the rollers by turning the adjustment knobs
3. Rotate the rollers by turning the main crank
4. When the rollers no longer make contact with one another, set the gap between them to “0”
5. Set the speed of the rollers to “10” (fastest)
6. Rotate the rollers several full rotations
7. Set the load speed back to “1” (slowest)
8. Set the gap between the rollers to the desired configuration
Consistent Pressure Mode
The consistent pressure mode is used to ensure uniformity of the resulting product. To enter the consistent pressure mode:
1. Set the load speed to “2”
2. Set the gap between the rollers to the desired configuration
3. Begin rotating the rollers
4. Slowly increase the load speed, but not beyond “5”
5. Make small adjustments to the load speed and gap as needed
Independent Roller Adjustment Mode
The independent roller adjustment mode is used to make minor adjustments to the pressure between two rollers. To enter the independent roller adjustment mode:
1. Set the load speed to “1” (slowest)
2. Rotate the rollers
3. While the rollers are rotating, adjust either the front or back roller using the adjustment knob until the desired pressure is achieved
4. When the adjustment has been made, raise the speed to “2” and continue rotating the rollers
These are the three modes of operation for the three roll mill. Be sure to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines when operating the mill.
