Cr12MoV Steel
Cr12MoV steel is a high-carbon and high-chromium alloy typically used in tooling applications. It has an excellent combination of mechanical properties which make it suitable for a wide range of machining requirements including milling and turning, producing parts with high resistance to wear and abrasion. Its consistent performance and ability to maintain its edge for extended periods of time make it an ideal fit for many applications, from HVAC components to precision engineering and tooling.
The primary alloying element in the Cr12MoV steel alloy is 12.5% chromium. This chromium content gives it higher corrosion resistance to oxidation and water than other similar tool steels such as D2 or S7. It also has high levels of molybdenum and vanadium, both of which contribute to increased wear resistance. The vanadium content also helps it maintain its sharp edge better than other steels. As with most carbon steels, it can be annealed to a softer state and re-hardened, a process which can be used to make it perfect for complex machining applications.
Because of its high hardness, Cr12MoV is often used to make dies, punches, and other cutting tools. It is also used in molds, dies and fixtures for machining, forming and cutting. Its excellent wear resistance also makes it ideal for making thread rolling dies and cold headers and nuts. It can also be used for grinders, taps, reamers and any other tooling application requiring a high degree of wear resistance and sharpness.
Cr12MoV steel is also very machinable, which makes it easy to use. Parts made from this alloy will hold their shape and size even after undergoing high levels of pressure and extreme temperatures. It also machine-finishes quite easily, and offers excellent edge holding, good dimensional stability and high toughness strength.
Due to its alloy composition and metallurgical properties, Cr12MoV steel has a multitude of versatile applications across industries. From HVAC components, to machine parts for die casting, to tooling applications requiring mechanical precision and resistance to wear, this alloy is a powerful solution. Its cost-effectiveness, machinability and hard-wearing properties make it an ideal choice for many projects.
