GB 9438-1988 Steel and Aluminum Casting Technical Specifications
This standard specifies the types, grades, requirements, tests, inspection and acceptance rules, packing, marking and quality certificate of steel and aluminum castings. The standard applies to ferrous castings, non-ferrous castings, alloy castings and stainless steel castings with non-ferrous parent metal and alloy castings used for engineering and industrial products.
I. Types
This standard applies to sand, core sand and precision castings.
Sand castings include manual castings and mechanized castings; core sand castings include dry core insert method and precoated core insert method; precision castings include lost wax castings, water glass shell casting, metal ceramic composite shell casting and centrifugal casting.
II. Grade and Grade Mark
The steel and aluminum castings shall be divided into qualitative grades and subgrades according to their properties other than appearance, chemical composition and tensile properties, as well as the required shapes, sizes and roughness.
The qualitative grades, subgrades and grade marks are as defined in Table 1.

III. Requirements
A. The requirements on the appearance of steel and aluminum castings shall be in accordance with Tables 2 and 3;
B. The chemical composition of steel and aluminum castings shall be in accordance with Table 4;
C. The tensile properties of steel and aluminum castings shall be in accordance with Tables 5 and 6;
D. The required shape, size and roughness of steel and aluminum castings shall be in accordance with Tables 7, 8 and 9.

IV. Tests
A. The mechanical tests on steel and aluminum castings shall be conducted in accordance with Table 10;
B. The hardness tests on steel and aluminum castings shall be conducted in accordance with Table 11;
C. The metallographic structure tests on steel and aluminum castings shall be conducted in accordance with Table 12;
D. The chemical composition and tensile properties tests on steel and aluminum castings shall be conducted in accordance with Table 13;

V. Inspection and Acceptance
The inspection and acceptance of steel and aluminum castings shall be conducted in accordance with Table 14.

VI. Packing, Marking and Quality Certificate
A. For steel and aluminum castings Packing, Marking and Quality Certificate shall be in accordance with Table 15;
B. For non-ferrous castings marked with the brand, grade and specification, the national standard number shall be indicated;
C. For alloy castings, the break-up castings shall be marked with the chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment condition and physical properties;
D. The Quality Certificate shall include the information of the casting type, required grades, testing results, inspection results, acceptance results and other relevant information.

VII. Supplementary Provisions
In addition to the requirements stipulated in this standard, the requirements of the corresponding relevant standards or the requirements of the relevant technical documents shall prevail.
