Renewable Energy and Mineral Resources
The Earths natural resources provide a variety of materials and energy sources that are essential to the survival of humanity. These resources originate from the Earths internal heat, from the light and heat of the sun, from chemical processes deep within the Earth’s rocky crust, and from the Earth’s magnetic field.
The two most important resources are renewable energy and mineral resources. Renewable energy sources are typically derived from sun, wind, geothermal, and hydro sources, whereas mineral resources are extracted from the Earth.
Renewable energy resources come from the direct energy of the sun and wind, or from the Earths own natural energy such as geothermal or hydroelectric sources. Solar energy is most easily harnessed through photovoltaic cells, which capture the light from the sun and convert it into electricity. Wind energy is harvested through turbines that convert the kinetic energy of the wind into power. Geothermal power is produced by tapping the natural heat of the Earths mantle and other sources. Hydroenergy is generated by exploiting the kinetic energy of moving water, such as rivers and tides.
Mineral resources, on the other hand, are extracted from the Earth in the form of metals, gemstones, oil, gas and coal. Mining operations extract minerals from the ground, generally in large-scale industrial operations. The most valuable mineral resources include gold, silver, copper, diamonds, oil and natural gas. Coal is another important source of energy, providing the majority of electricity used in the world.
Both renewable energy and mineral resources are necessary for the continued prosperity of individuals and societies around the world. Renewable energy is being harnessed in an attempt to reduce the reliance on non-renewable resources, and thus reduce the amount of pollution released into the environment. Mineral resources are also essential for providing the materials and components that are used in everyday life.
Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important as a source of clean, reliable, and cost-effective power. Governments around the world are encouraging the development and application of renewable energy sources as part of their overall energy strategy. As of 2014, more than half of the world’s electricity was generated from renewable sources.
In the near future, renewable energy and mineral resources will become ever more important for humanity. The development of new and more efficient renewable energy sources and increased exploration of mineral resources will be essential for meeting the demands of a growing population. Renewable energy and mineral resources will provide the foundation for a strong economy and a healthy, sustainable environment.
