HG/T3388-1999 is a standard of industrial grade naphthalene, which was issued by the Ministry of Chemical Industry of China in 1999. This standard has been revised several times in the past twenty years. Recently, it has been amended to become HG/T3388-2014. This article describes the changes made in the standard.

Firstly, HG/T3388-1999 has comparatively low quality requirements. For example, the maximum acceptable impurity threshold is greater than 0.2% for some categories such as catechol and cresols. The purpose of the amendment was to enhance the quality requirements resulting in better quality of naphthalene and a reduction in the amount of residual impurity.

Secondly, subitems such as naphthalene sulphonic acid, naphthalene methyl ether, and naphthol were added to modify HG/T3388-1999. These subitems were specifically chosen as they have been widely used and widely available amongst chemical producers in China since the late 1990s. By including these subitems, producers can take advantage of lower costs associated with the use of these substances in the production process, instead of having to rely on more expensive substitutes for naphthalene.

Thirdly, requirements relating to the production process and storage conditions were also amended. For example, the process requirements were tightened, with production operations needing to be closely monitored and closely adhered to. The storage requirements were also made more stringent, specifying that naphthalene should be stored in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and rain.

Fourthly, the standards were adjusted to include additional identifiers, such as the production date of batches of naphthalene, in order to better inform users of the source and quality of naphthalene they had purchased.

Overall, the amendment to HG/T3388-1999 was necessary in order to ensure a high level of quality for naphthalene and its related products. By introducing better production processes and technical requirements, users of naphthalene can be assured of a product of consistently good quality and reliability. The changes to the standard have proven to be successful, and the standards are continuing to evolve as a result of the amendments made in 2014.
