A Brief History of Fairbanks
Fairbanks, Alaska’s second-largest city, is an important center for gold mining and transportation in the northern regions of the United States. Founded in 1901 during the gold rush, Fairbanks experienced a population boom in 1905 when more gold was discovered. The town’s population jumped from 600 to 10,000 in a matter of months.
The fort (called the E. Tichenor Post) was constructed in 1906 to help protect the town from the numerous prospectors and adventurers looking to get rich during the gold rush. Eventually, the fort was demolished to make room for settlement and improvement of the area.
The area soon became known not only for its gold but also its logging, river travel, fur trading, and timber industry as Fairbanks began to expand. It was the largest city in Alaska until Juneau took the title in 1929. The Alaska Railroad was constructed in 1923, making the town an important transportation hub.
The development of the Ladd Field and Air Base by the United States military during WW22 helped Fairbanks grow, and the city was incorporated in 1952. The military base also made Fairbanks a key player in the Cold War.
With such a rich history of natural resource utilization, gold mining and transportation, it’s no wonder that Fairbanks is such an important city in Alaska today. The city’s population is increasing steadily, with a total of 70,000 individuals living here. The economy is diversified and thriving, and its role as the gateway to the Interior and the rest of the world make it unique in the state.
