Stamping, also known as pressing, is the process of using a press for plastic deformation of a workpiece to obtain a certain shape and size , and is called stamping parts. The stamping parts are also collectively known as stamped parts. For example, the outer cover of an electrical control box and the casing of an automobile are all products of stamping.

Stamping is a method of forming metal deformation. The principle is to place a blank between the upper die and the lower die of the stamping machine and apply pressure to cause plastic deformation or separation to obtain the shape and size of the stamping part. During stamping, the material of the blank undergoes a large amount of plastic deformation and its shape changes, resulting in a high mechanical efficiency of the parts processed by stamping. Currently, stamping is the most commonly used metal forming method. It features low energy expenditure, high precision and flexibility in forming. It has become an indispensable processing technology in the fields of aviation and aerospace, military industry, navigation and communication, electrical appliances, energy and transportation, etc.

Stamping process consists of two parts: die making and stamping. Die making includes die design and manufacturing, fabrication of cutting parts and molding. Stamping includes preparation before stamping, process selection and stamping, inspection and other process.

Nowadays, China is actively promoting the application of new technologies, materials and methods in stamping, such as plasma quenching, 2000°C quenching, cold extrusion and other methods. Through the introduction of new materials and technologies in stamping, there is a great potential to expand the application of stamping and to reduce the cost and improve the quality of stamping products.

The development of stamping technology is inseparable from the continuous improvement of dies and the improvement of stamping machines. Stamping machines are powered by mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and servo drive systems. Mechanical presses are divided into single-point progressive and multi-point progressive. The die is divided into drawing die, cutting die, routing die and molding die. The mold is divided into blanking mold, progressive die, trimming die, burr die and flanging die.

Stamping can produce a large number of parts at a low cost. It is widely used in the production of automotive parts and consumer products. In view of the special requirements of products, it is necessary to develop new production processes and continuously improve the production efficiency of stamping.
