St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved figures in Catholic history. He was born in Assisi, Italy in 1182 and was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. Though Francis had a relatively comfortable upbringing, he was drawn to a life of poverty and devoted himself to helping those in need. At the age of twenty-two, he had a profound spiritual experience which led him to found the Order of Friars Minor in 1209. He dedicated himself to a life of poverty, humility, and service of the Church.

Throughout his life, Francis was known for his incredible humility, strength of character, and unwavering faith. He was known for famously sharing his goods, giving away his last penny, and having an intimate spiritual relationship with God. He was a beloved figure for both the Church and the people, always preaching humility and service to others. His most famous work was the Canticle of the Sun, a song of praise to God that has since become an iconic prayer.

Though he was a beloved figure, his life was not without difficulty. He suffered many physical illnesses and endured periods of deep depression and spiritual struggle. He fled his home after his father threatened to disown him over his dedication to the Church, and he was forced to wear sackcloth and begged for his food. At times, he would collapse in the streets in prayer, an example of his intense devotion to his faith.

He is best known for the Sermon on the Mount, in which he teaches us to love our enemy and bless those who curse us. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, and was declared the patron saint of animals in 1263.
