The city of Wuxi, located in Jiangsu province, is one of the most important cities in the Yangtze delta region in eastern China. Sitting on the north bank of Taihu Lake, Wuxi has a long history that dates back to the Xia Dynasty over 4,000 years ago. It has a population of over 6 million people and is known as one of the state’s most important cultural, educational, and commercial centers.

An ancient city’s rich history

Wuxi is renowned for its long and illustrious history. During the Xia Dynasty, it was the capital of the ancient Gong state. In the Spring and Autumn period, the famous philosopher and sage Confucius passed through the city, and the state’s recorded history can be traced back to the Warring States period of 481 BC. In later centuries, Wuxi was alternatively positioned as part of the Wu kingdom and the Song dynasty. Today, visitors can still follow the ancient path of classical scholars and trace the footsteps of Confucius to his hometown of Qufu.

A modern city

In modern times, Wuxi rapidly developed from a small fishing and farming town in the late 19th century to one of the most industrialised regions of the country. By the mid-20th century, Wuxi had become one of the most important cities in the region, mass producing steel, chemicals, and motor vehicles.

This industrial base has grown significantly over the subsequent decades, with a large number of international companies now having established headquarters and factories in the city. Major corporations operating in the region include Nokia, Siemens, Dell, Motorola, Bosch and Audi. Wuxi has also become a major hub for research and development activities, with a number of colleges and universities in the city.

Cultural attractions

As well as being an important economic center, Wuxi also boasts considerable cultural attractions. There are a number of historical sites in the area, including the Wuxi Grand Bridge, which covers an area of over 400 acres and dates back more than two thousand years.

The city also features a number of gardens and parks, including the Jinji Lake, which is the largest lake in the area and features a number of temples and pavilions. Visitors can also explore the Three Kingdoms City, which is a theme park containing replicas of buildings and attractions from the historical period.

Wuxi is an important and fascinating city, boasting a long and rich history and some of the most modern business and industrial centers in the region. Its importance on both economic and cultural fronts make it one of the most visited cities in China.
