Liquid–solid separation is a process in which components of a mixture are separated through the use of various techniques. Examples of liquid–solid separation processes include filtration, sedimentation, centrifugation, and decantation.

Filtration

Filtration is a process used to separate solids from liquids. This technique is commonly used in water treatment to remove solid particles or contaminants from the water supply. The most common filter media used in water treatment include sand and activated carbon. During filtration, a pressure differential is created on opposite sides of the filter. This pressure differential causes the liquid to pass through the filter while the solids are retained.

Sedimentation

Sedimentation is a process in which heavier particles settle out of a mixture containing lighter, less dense particles. This process can be used to separate solid particles of different sizes and weights. In sedimentation, a slurry is placed into a tank. As gravity acts upon the particles, they fall to the bottom of the tank and are separated from the lighter material.

Centrifugation

Centrifugation is the use of centrifugal force to separate solids from liquids. This process involves placing a slurry in a machine that rotates at a high speed. The centrifugal force created by the spinning motion separates the solid particles from the liquid. This technique is commonly used for blood analysis and for separation of biological or chemical agents.

Decantation

Decantation is a process that uses gravity to separate solids from liquids. During decantation, a mixture is placed in a container and allowed to settle. The heavier, denser particles settle to the bottom while the lighter material will float on top. The mixture is then slowly poured off the top, leaving the solids in the container.
