ASTM A167-1996 Specification for Stainless and Heat-Resisting Chromium-Nickel Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip

1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers stainless and heat-resisting chromium-nickel steel plate, sheet and strip. The types of stainless steel covered are listed in Table 1.

1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

2. Referenced Documents

2.1 ASTM Standards:

A480/A480M Specification for General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Stainless and Heat-Resisting Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip

3. Ordering Information

3.1 Orders for material under this specification should include the following, as required, to describe the desired material adequately:

3.1.1 Quantity (weight in pounds or pieces),

3.1.2 Name of material (chromium-nickel steel plate, sheet, or strip),

3.1.3 Grades or types (Table 1),

3.1.4 Finish (Table 2),

3.1.5 Untreated, heat-treated, or precipitation-hardened condition (see 4.1),

3.1.6 Width and length required (in inches [mm] or by another suitable method), and

3.1.7 Name and address of purchaser.

4. Condition

4.1 The material is available as follows:

4.1.1 Untreated—Material received without further heat or cold treatment (see 6.2).

4.1.2 Heat-Treated—Material received after application of heating and/or cooling operations, in which case the responsible producer or processor shall designate the condition upon agreement with the purchaser.

4.1.3 Precipitation-Hardened—Material received after application of a suitable heat treatment followed by a suitable aging treatment, in which case the responsible processor or producer shall designate the condition upon agreement with the purchaser.

5. Heat Treatment

5.1 All heat-treated material must be capable of meeting the requirements of this specification in its heat-treated condition. Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, the heat treatment to which the material is to be subjected shall be the responsibility of the producer or processor.

6. Chemical Requirements

6.1 The material shall conform to the chemical requirements specified in Table 3.

6.2 If material is received in the as-rolled condition and is to be subsequently heat treated, the heat treating furnace atmosphere should provide a inert atmosphere. This is to prevent the formation of oxides, carbides, and other undesired phases.

7. Mechanical Requirements

7.1 The material shall conform to the mechanical requirements specified in Table 4.

8. Fabrication

8.1 The fabrication practices of the manufacturer should be in keeping with good metallurgical and engineering practice.

9. Retests

9.1 If any retest is conducted that involves heat treatment, the results shall meet the requirements of this specification in the condition in which the material is supplied.

10. Test Methods

10.1 Tests shall be made in accordance with the referenced Test Methods and Definitions.

11. Rejection and Rehearing

11.1 Rejection—Material that fails to meet the requirements of this specification shall be rejected and abandoned at once.

11.2 Rehearing—Material that fails to meet the requirements of this specification may be returned to the source of supply for rehearing upon agreement between the responsible processor or producer and the purchaser.

12. Certification

12.1 Upon request and for a fee, the processor or producer shall furnish a certificate that the material supplied has been tested in accordance with the requirements of this specification and has been found to meet its requirements.

ASTM A 167 is an American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard that covers chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip, used for pressure vessels, boiler and other structural applications. A 167 is suitable for welding by all conventional welding processes, such as shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and submerged arc welding. This grade has good resistance to oxidation and intergranular corrosion and suitable for use in salt water and chlorine solutions.

ASTM A 167 covers chromium-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips for atmospheric corrosion resistance and high temperature service. The steel shall be slit and sheared from specific metallic, provided in different grades and sizes. Plate, sheet and strip, which are of thickness less than 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) and of widths greater than 30 inches (762 mm) shall be cut from the thin plates and sheet.

ASTM A 167 is a standard that covers chromium-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips for corrosion resistance and high temperatures. Steel in these materials must pass three types of tests: resistance to oxidation and intergranular corrosion, salt water and chlorine solutions, and high temperatures. The steel must also meet other requirements, such as chemical composition, product analyses, and mechanical properties.

ASTM A 167 is a versatile and dependable chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip. This standard is suitable for a variety of welding applications due to its good resistance to oxidation and intergranular corrosion and its suitability for use in salt water and chlorine solutions. Furthermore, ASTM A 167 provides good mechanical properties, chemical composition and product analyses, making it a reliable choice for various applications.
