UNS S44004 (4Cr14MoV) Martensitic Stainless Steel

UNS S44004 (4Cr14MoV) martensitic stainless steel is a stainless steel alloy featuring excellent corrosion resistance and high hardness with a tensile strength of 1000 Mpa. This makes UNS S44004 suitable for many applications such as firearms, weapons and surgical instruments. UNS S44004 also has good yield strength characteristics and is relatively easy to machine and form compared to other austenitic and ferritic stainless steel alloys.

UNS S44004 is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum-vanadium (Cr-Mo-V) stainless steel which is well known for its good abrasion resistance and wear resistance. The high chromium content (11 – 15%) of this stainless steel give it good corrosion resistance, while the addition of molybdenum and vanadium help to increase its toughness and strength. The molybdenum and vanadium increase the amount of chromium carbides present and thus reduce the amount of free chromium present in the alloy, improving the corrosion resistance of the steel.

UNS S44004 is often referred to as the “4Cr14MoV” stainless steel and is an extremely versatile alloy. This alloy can be used for a wide range of applications, from surgical instruments and weapons, to cutlery and tools, and even parts for the oil and gas industry. It offers superior performance in corrosive environments as well as high hardness and good abrasion resistance. In addition, UNS S44004 can be heat-treated to alter its properties for different applications, allowing for further versatility of this alloy.

UNS S44004 is commonly available in a number of compositions, including the ones listed here: 18Cr-14Ni-6Mo-1.5V and 18Cr-11Ni-6Mo-1.5V. The 18Cr-14Ni-6Mo-1.5V specifies the higher percentage of chromium and nickel, which is important for use in harsher environments. The 18Cr-11Ni-6Mo-1.5V composition offers higher molybdenum and vanadium content, which helps improve the overall wear resistance of the alloy.

Overall, UNS S44004 is an excellent choice for applications requiring a high level of wear resistance, corrosion resistance and strength. It can be easily machined and formed and is well suited for use in the manufacture of surgical instruments, cutlery, tools, firearms and other components in the oil and gas industry.
