Physical Inactivity
Everyone knows the importance of exercise, but many just don’t get enough. Physical inactivity has become a major problem in today’s world as modern conveniences like television and cars reduce the need for physical activity in everyday life. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that “there is a clear link between physical inactivity and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, depression, and certain forms of cancer,” and that “these diseases can all be worsened by inactivity and can significantly reduce life expectancy.” Thankfully, physicians are beginning to emphasize the impacts of physical inactivity to their patients and providing resources to help them become more active.
The importance of physical activity cannot be understated. Regular physical activity has been proven to reduce the risk of various diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Additionally, physical activity can help with weight control, improve overall physical and mental wellbeing, reduce stress levels, and help reduce the risks of certain types of cancer. The CDC recommends that adults should get at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity (walking, swimming, jogging, etc.) per week. They also recommend muscle-strengthening activities 2 or more days per week to avoid any injuries or aches.
Unfortunately, physical inactivity is on the rise. A 2018 study by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows that only 20.4% of U.S. adults meet the recommended aerobic activity guidelines. The good news is that there is still time to take action and make a positive change in your life. Start by making small changes in your lifestyle, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking to work or school, or setting a timer to remind you to get up and move around throughout the day. As you become more active, you can increase your levels of physical activity and start to see the benefits of exercise.
You don’t have to join a gym or take up an extreme sport to benefit from exercise. Moving your body in a way that is enjoyable and fits into your lifestyle is the most important factor in increasing physical activity. This could be something as simple as going for a walk outside or playing a game of Frisbee with friends. Additionally, there are a variety of online resources available to help you find the type of activity that is right for you.
It’s never too late to get moving and improve your physical health. Find an activity that you enjoy and make a plan to get moving today. With just a little bit of effort, you can make a big difference in your health and wellbeing.
