Algoma Steel Inc. is a Canadian steel company based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The company was founded in 1902 by financier Henry Emery and was incorporated as Algoma Steel Corporation Limited in 1911. Algoma is one of Canadas leading steel producers, producing steel products for a wide range of industries including automotive, construction, mining and more. The company has been a cornerstone in the Sault Ste. Marie community since its inception, providing employment to thousands of workers and contributing to the growth of the local economy.
Algomas steel production process begins with the melting and casting of steel in electric-arc furnaces. As a continuous caster, the molten steel is cast into slabs straight out of the furnace. These slabs are then processed in either Algoma’s plate mills or bar mills, depending on the customers needs. The plate mills process the slabs into steel plates, while the bar mills process them into steel bars. Algoma also operates a state-of-the-art pickling line, which chemically cleans the steel plates before they can be cold rolled into different shapes.
Algomas commitment to quality and environmental stewardship is evidenced by its investments in advanced technology and its adherence to strict environmental standards. The company recycles all by-products generated during its steel production process and has a strong commitment to reducing energy consumption and water use. Algoma is also certified to ISO 9001: 2008, the worlds most stringent quality standard.
In recent years, Algoma has undergone a major transformation, investing heavily in modernizing its facilities to enhance product quality and productivity. Algoma is now well-positioned to produce steel products that meet the ever-changing needs of its customers.
Through its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship, Algoma Steel Inc. is proud to remain one of Canadas leading steel producers. The company will continue to work to meet the needs of its customers with high-quality steel products for many years to come.
